Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain decisions from the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
