A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
