The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
